If you are an American adult, there is a pretty good chance you regularly enjoy a daily cup of coffee. In fact, 62% of American adults drink the beverage that seems to drive our country at least once a day. An average American coffee drinker consumes 3 cups per day!* The COVID-19 pandemic has also seen an increase in at-home coffee drinkers.* Not only does coffee give many of us what we need to keep focused and energized on the day’s events, but it may even lower your risk of death.* It is no wonder so many of us fit into the category of “coffee drinker”.

The coffee-boom is not the only rapidly expanding market in America. The recent passing of the Farm Bill in 2018 has seen an exponential increase in cannabis hemp products available to the everyday consumer.* Hemp is the cousin of marijuana; it contains less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC and therefore will not produce any psychoactive effects (you won’t be “high”). Instead, hemp contains high levels of cannabidiol (CBD). CBD does not produce any psychoactive effects.

CBD, like Delta-9 THC and over 100 other molecules that make up the cannabis plant, is called a cannabinoid. Cannabinoids interact with your body’s Endocannabinoid System (ECS). The ECS is responsible for keeping all bodily functions in check. This means your level of energy, focus, mood, hunger/digestion, how well you sleep, pain management, inflammation response, anxiety/stress response, and more can all benefit from CBD interacting with the ECS.

So, what about using them together? Are there CBD and coffee benefits? A morning cup of Joe and a fresh CBD Pre Roll or a delicious CBD Gummy sounds pretty nice, doesn’t it? You can even drop a few CBD Drops into your coffee. In this article, we are going to take a look at some of the benefits you may discover when using a bit of CBD with your coffee.

Lower Stress

How do we deal with our stress? Exercise and a healthy diet are essential to your well-being, which includes your levels of stress. Mediation has become a popular practice to increase mindfulness and reduce stress. In the moment of stress, many of us reach for a calming cup of coffee. Some of us reach for a CBD Gummy or other CBD product. This is no surprise! Both the caffeine in coffee and CBD interact with your body’s Endocannabinoid System (ECS – discussed above) to actively reduce stress in your body.* Together, they may be able to turn a stressful situation into a stressless one.

Increase Happiness

“Don’t bother me before I’ve had my cup of coffee”. This is something we have probably all heard a few times. But, what exactly does coffee do to give your day a happiness boost? Dopamine is a neurotransmitter (chemical messenger) that plays a role in our levels of pleasure and happiness.* Both cannabis and caffeine have been shown to increase levels of dopamine. They can each increase dopamine levels independently of each other, but together their effects are even more prominent.*

Prevent Anxiety/Jitters

As good as that cup of Joe may taste, sometimes the caffeine can be a bit much. Who has had a 3pm cup of coffee to finish the day and next thing you know, your eyes are wide, legs are shaking, and your mind racing? It is possible that caffeine can increase levels of general anxiety among adults and especially in college students and adolescents.* It is worth noting that the positive effects from caffeine may outweigh the negatives, but this is different person-to-person. CBD use may be able to decrease levels of anxiety, even if it’s just the caffeine talking.*,

Stop Memory Loss

CBD’s effect on memory is still early in the research phases. While data is limited, some studies suggest that CBD might be able to increase cognitive function and memory is not affected.* Other cannabinoids found in cannabis, particularly the psychoactive Delta-9 THC, may negatively affect memory function.* In animal studies, caffeine use has been shown to protect against memory loss.* Just another excuse to enjoy your coffee!
